As we’ve helped many property owners to reimagine their spaces, we’ve found some guidelines and general rules that can be helpful in planning and designing renovation projects.

Today, let’s talk about some of the best home renovation practices, to complement the great tips that are already on our blog about how to renovate and improve a property.

What do people talk about when they meet with their contractors and renovation services?

Think about these best practices for updating a kitchen or bathroom or other interior space…

Plan for Traffic

One of the most basic and fundamental components of planning is to think about how people will move through a space, whether it’s a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or some other type of living area.

In the kitchen, you want to think about how cooking will progress from one station to the other – and the spacing between appliances like the oven and range top, refrigerator, dishwasher, sink, etc.

In a bathroom, you want to think about people taking a shower, and how they will move into and out of the space. Basically, you want to design something that’s going to do two things: stand up well to use, and make things convenient for inhabitants.

Then, with that in mind, you will proceed to some concept sketches that provide that critical space and layout.

Lighting

We’ve also found that in most cases, being able to admit natural light is critically important.

It makes the difference between a drab or dreary interior space and one that is vibrant and welcoming!

We know that how we experience the inside of a building with our senses matters – so keep lighting in mind, and you won’t be disappointed.

Materials and Maintenance

One of the best home renovation practices is to plan out the materials that you will use for various parts of the renovation, and how you will maintain it afterward. For example, maintaining wood is different than maintaining different types of carbon materials. Maintaining vinyl or aluminum siding is different than maintaining other types of exteriors.

With the right kind of planning information in hand, you can move forward confidently with your renovation project. How do you do this? In close consultation with a great trusted partner.
