Many of the projects that we do require some research and work prior to starting the actual renovation. In fact, nearly all of them do. How this is done is important!

In many cases, it helps envision a space as it will be, and figure out how that applies to design and planning.

Let’s talk about a few components of this that have been important as we network with our customers and listen, in order to provide the best customized results.

Brightness

People want brighter and more attractive spaces. That’s what’s behind a lot of renovations.

The ethos of the 1970s construction world was often a focus on heaviness, on traditional wood designs that could be vastly somber and dark, even with a lot of interior lighting.

So a big part of what modern renovations do away with is that heavy, dark feeling provided by traditional cabinetry and other wood surfaces.

What replaces it? There are a lot of different options, but what you typically see includes white or off-white paint, attractive brightly colored tile work, and a sort of clean modernistic vibe.

Clear, Open Spaces

People also often want spaces that are clear and open. There is a planning and design component to this in terms of islands, doorways, etc. There’s also considering how interior systems work with the exterior and the landscaping of a property. Encroaching trees and shrubs should be dealt with accordingly. Inside, builders and other stakeholders should plan to have better floor plans that people can move around in easily, and enjoy the versatility that comes with big open spaces.

Envisioning a space that’s clear and open is much harder than it seems. Contrary to popular belief, there’s much more to envision than what meets the eye (or mind) at first glance.

Maintenance Forecasts

Whatever you have put inside your home, you’ll need to take care of it from year to year. Some of that goes into planning as well, for instance, looking at how to access home systems and at the same time, how to hide unsightly home systems from view. You want to be able to get to the nuts and bolts of your home, but you don’t often want them on display, because they distract from the clear, open design we talked about above.
