Let’s talk about something that contractors don’t really often talk about.
Let’s talk about creativity.
In general, we often find that there’s this cultural divide between trades work, which we see as practical and utilitarian, and knowledge work, which we see as creative and artsy. But some of that construct is really artificial and doesn’t serve us very well. Here’s why.
In the course of improving various properties, we’ve seen how creativity supports our teams. Some examples will show why it’s good to have people who combine technical prowess with creativity.
Renovations
In significant renovations of any kind, there’s a lot of problem solving to be done. What do you do with a part of an installation that doesn’t quite dovetail with something else around it? How do you work with irregular projections or situations where part of a surface is deteriorated but the rest is fine? The footprint of the building is a complex thing, and creativity goes a long way.
As we work around spaces, we apply creative solutions all the time. That’s just one example – there are also others that show why having a creative and problem-solving mindset is good in this field.
Fixing Problems
You have to be creative when it comes to fixing problems as well.
This isn’t the type of thing where you just “order A to plug-in B and cover C.” You can have a lot of situations where creative problem-solving again comes into the picture. Let’s say, for example, you’re dealing with a loosening balustrade for a spiral staircase. You just order a part out of a catalog? Experienced people know that it’s not like that, but it takes some experience to understand how creativity works in this business. It means actually being on-site and looking at what the crew is dealing with day to day.
Imagining Spaces
Here’s another part of the value that creativity brings to the table. When you talk with the client, spend time listening to them talk about their goals, and what they want out of a property, you can also be adding your own comments and suggestions based on practical experience. That’s a creative process that’s fun and enjoyable, but also very valuable when it comes to planning and designing jobs.
